Chunghwa Telecom is expanding its footprint far beyond traditional telecommunications, announcing an ambitious new portfolio of film and television investments during the Taiwan Creative Content Fest. This strategic pivot sees the telco partnering with the Taiwanese government to fuel a diverse array of storytelling projects, ranging from gritty crime procedurals to whimsical comedies. Among the most anticipated additions is Gunshot, a police drama starring Kent Tsai that explores the tension between institutional reward and genuine virtue through the eyes of three conflicted officers.

The company is also making waves in the realm of international cinema with Call Of Lobster, a high profile action comedy featuring stars Chang Chen and Choi Siwon. Based loosely on the eccentric true story of a Taiwanese lobster farmer working with North Korea, the project gained momentum after winning a prestigious award at this year’s festival. Beyond these flagship titles, Chunghwa is diversifying into various genres, including the horror cinematic universe of Demon Of The East – Black Condo and several fantasy and urban dramas designed to capture different segments of the viewing public.

This investment surge comes on the heels of significant critical success for the company’s earlier ventures, such as Arrested Memory and The Photo From 1977, which together earned twelve Golden Horse Award nominations. By venturing into everything from reality cooking shows to indie music tours, Chunghwa aims to transition from being a mere service provider to a central engine for cultural production. The strategy focuses heavily on bridging the gap between local creators and global distribution networks.

During the announcements, officials emphasized that this initiative represents a symbiotic relationship between corporate stability and artistic risk. While Minister of Culture Li Yuan praised the company for using its commercial strength to support professionals in the arts, senior executives at Chunghwa noted that their goal is to act as a catalyst for growth. By connecting funding with raw creative talent, they hope to elevate Taiwanese narratives onto the world stage while strengthening the domestic entertainment ecosystem.
